EVENT FIVE WRAP UP
The fifth round of the PGAC 24/25 is now complete, and it's safe to say the weather was much kinder than in recent months. This was evident in both the number of rounds played and the higher scores at the top of the leaderboard. A total of 47 players tackled the beautiful, challenging, and at times brutal course at St Andrews Beach.
Out of the 47 competitors, no fewer than 10 matched or exceeded their handicap—by far the most in any month so far. Despite over 20% of the field hitting or surpassing their handicap, the overall average round score still hovered just above 30 points. This places St Andrews Beach right in the middle of the pack in terms of difficulty this season. Here are some of the highlights and low points from the month:
Monthly Winner:
ROHAN MOSTERT (25): Proving that less golf isn’t always a disadvantage, Rohan has only played three rounds in the past six months, all in the PGAC, yet he’s averaged over 39 points, including a runner-up finish in round 1. St Andrews Beach never stood a chance against his consistent fairway accuracy off the tee, leading to a solid 42 points—a score that could have been even higher if not for an 8 on the 12th.
Monthly Runner Up:
MARK SHUTER (21): An ever consistent player whom hasnt put up a PGAC round of less than 30 points all season had a day out after swiping the first he went on to accumulate 40 points over his remaining seventeen holes.
Top Performances:
Best Front 9:
CAM ASKER (17) & RYAN LAVERY (16): Great effort by both lads making the turn at 20 points. Electric start to the round in particular for Lavery who started birdie birdie to be 7 points after his first two holes.
Best Back 9:
ROHAN MOSTERT (25): Even with his swipe on the 12th still managed a dominant 23 points, with his tap in birdie for five points on the 18th the exclamation point on a winning round.
Best Gross Score:
DANIEL FLEMING (11): An impressive 81 off the stick saw Fleming become the first man to dethrone the PGAC Gross King Reece Twyford.
This month's unfortunate NAGA points recipients were:
Round 5 NAGA Points:
•RYAN DALE: 5 Points
• JOEL WELSFORD: 4 Points
• CONNOR PHELAN & MATT MCDONALD: 3 Points
• TRAV QUIRK: 2 Points
• ANDREW CESTER & ANGUS BOWDEN: 1 Point each
After hearing about Ryan Dale's nightmare round, I was initially joyous for his Yarrawonga Cup singles opponent, who is very eager to reverse last year's whitewash. You can imagine my disappointment when I checked the leaderboard and saw that poor Welsford hadn’t fared much better. A special mention goes to Trav Quirk, making his third appearance in the NAGA points. It’s worth noting that more than half of the scores contributing to Trav's handicap date back to 2005—when several of his fellow PGAC competitors were still in nappies!
MONTHLY AWARDS:
TINDER AWARD
The player/s with the most swipes on their scorecard.
☆JOEL WELSFORD ☆ - 8 Swipes including his first four holes
GATTUSO AWARD
Awarded to the player with the greatest variance between their front and back nines. This accolade pays tribute to the passionate Italian football coach/player Gennaro Gattuso and his truly descriptive quote surrounding his teams performance. This 5 second YouTube video is a must see to truly understand the Gattuso Award:

☆TRAV JONES & ANGUS BOWDEN ☆ - 9 Point Difference (18 & 9 for Trav, 16 & 7 for Gus)
KING GATTUSO AWARD
Awarded to the player who takes their Gattuso Golf to unprecedented levels.
☆ BRETT HOGAN ☆ had a very respectable 36 points playing off his 28 handicap at St Andrews Beach but the truly Gattuso golf is on full display upon breaking his round down further:
2 x Swipes
8 x 1 pointers
0 x 2 Pointers
4 x 3 Pointers
4 x 4 Pointers
In other words, through 18 holes of golf not once did Hogan play to his actual handicap for a hole, a truer example of Gattuso golf you are unlikely to see this year!
ASHES AWARD
☆David "Spyke" Millican☆
Awarded to Spyke for bringing the cricketing rivalry between our two great nations onto the golf course. When he spotted one half of our coat of arms on the 8th fairway, his inner Pom kicked in, and he aimed his driver directly at Skippy with precision. Unfortunately for Spyke, much like our top-order batsmen, Skippy skillfully deflected the shot, sending the ball straight into a deep fairway bunker.
PARIS RAHM AWARD
If you caught the final round of Men's Golf at the Paris Olympics, you'll understand why the Mito Pereira Award has been renamed. Jon Rahm, the volatile Spaniard, had delivered 64 holes of brilliant golf, holding a four-shot lead and seemingly destined for the gold medal. However, what unfolded over his last eight holes turned into one of the most shocking collapses in golf history. Rahm not only lost his grip on the gold but ultimately finished tied for 5th, unbelievably missing out on a podium finish altogether.
The Paris Rahm, as it will now be called, is awarded each month to the competitor who shits the bed the most. Whether it's botching the final few holes, squandering a home-course advantage, or struggling in ideal golfing conditions, there are countless ways for players to earn this less than prestigious honor. This months winner was:
☆Matt McDonald☆
Matt became the latest victim of a recurring trend in the PGAC 24/25 season, where the supposed home-course advantage turns into a curse. For those unfamiliar, when we play a course where a competitor is a member, it’s their first round with a fellow PGAC member that counts. Unfortunately for Matt, when it came time for his round that mattered, the curse hit hard, resulting in his worst performance of the year at St. Andrews, with just 21 Stableford points, landing him firmly in the NAGA ranks. The real kicker? Matt’s first round of August was an incredible two-over 72 for 40 points—tough luck, Matt. You’re not the first, and you certainly won’t be the last, to experience this!
Thats the Round 5 wrap up, see you all at Eagle Ridge GC for Round 6! Hit them well
