EVENT FOUR WRAP UP
With the fourth round of the PGAC done and dusted it’s time now to look back at the month that was. Let's face it, July was wet and wild except for perhaps 3 or 4 days with a few lucky players managing to happen upon them. The majority however were met with horrendously hostile, borderline unplayable conditions!
That is both the beauty and the sinister nature of our competition, some months the golf gods and mother nature will smile upon you the next month they'll take a steaming hot turd all over you! Given just how bad the weather all month I’m seriously impressed we still had 38 players get out and play. Truly it's a testament to not only your mental instability but also your love of golf and this competition!
Out of the 38 competitors, five competitors met or exceeded their handicap. As expected the weather conditions played a huge part in the scoring this month. The end result was that the average score for the month was just over 28 points, the second lowest just ahead of Cape Schanck. As always there was Good and there was Bad let's start with the highlights:
Monthly Winner:
TOM BAILEY (10) after back to back months in the NAGA points, especially last month when the golf/weather gods gave him the bird. Clearly Tom's prayers were heard and he was afforded favourable weather conditions which he took full advantage of shooting a 79 off the stick bagging this month's victory with 39 stableford points, congrats mate!
Monthly Runner Up:
BARRY BATES (13) timed his round perfectly finding stunning weather on the second last day of the comp. In fact the only thing wet about Barry's round was his sail as he came home strong scoring 19 points in his final 7 holes to take out the runner up spot on a countback over Brenton May whom both finished on 38 points.
Top Performances:
Best Front 9:
BRENTON MAY (10) it was fantastic to see the current season NAGA leader reverse his form. Even though it was his last nine he did it better than anyone else with a ripping 1 over 37 for 22 points. Two 4 pointer birdies including a holed 20m putt from off the green on the 9th took Brenton into a 3rd place finish for the month!
Best Back 9:
BARRY BATES (13) showing us all he was the master of the back nine Barry caught fire down the stretch finishing with 21 points! That gave him an almost unbeatable countback score to the detriment of his fellow front nine winner Brenton.
Best Gross Score:
REECE TWYFORD (7): Easiest component of these wrap ups. Copy Paste same name every month! I was lucky enough to play with him for this round and it was a pleasure to watch his almost flawless 78 off the stick earning Reece 4th place for the month. Can anyone stop this mans streak?!
This month's unfortunate NAGA points recipients were:
Round 4 NAGA Points:
This month perfectly demonstrated just how fickle golf can be with the bottom two players being our first two monthly champions this season. The lads were met with very challenging conditions I just wish we could say that for all the names in this month's NAGA points:
• CARL ATTWOOD: 5 Points
• FINN JONES: 4 Points
• SPYKE MILLICAN: 3 Points
• TRAV QUIRK: 2 Points
• ROBBIE GREENWOOD: 1 Point each
MONTHLY AWARDS:
TINDER AWARD
The player/s with the most swipes on their scorecard.
☆CARL ATTWOOD & FINN JONES☆ - 9 Swipes
GATTUSO AWARD
Awarded to the player with the greatest variance between their front and back nines. This accolade pays tribute to the passionate Italian football coach/player Gennaro Gattuso and his truly descriptive quote surrounding his teams performance. This 5 second YouTube video is a must see to truly understand the Gattuso Award:
https://youtu.be/QJHUbtR0yI8?si=LEK88SKComSvQQhl
☆ANGUS BOWDEN☆ - 12 Point Difference (19 Front 7 Back)
TINMAN AWARD
☆DAN FLEMING☆
Our much loved former ambo now full time crypto sleuth whom occasionally rescues cats from trees and whatever else water fairies do with all their free time (pure jealousy, we know). For those too young to get the Wizard of Oz reference I apologise but those who know, know!
Fleming earns this award because despite being booked in with a group of 8 players heading to the Dunes. I have it on good authority that he was a very very late withdrawal as he was a bit worried about getting a little wet. The seven that did play were met by the type of conditions 90% of the competition would have killed for! No rain and minimal wind!
HOCM AWARD
Essentially the opposite of the previous award instead of No Heart these boys were All Heart. As if the photos and videos from their round didnt say enough, the fact that not a single other player paid up for the comp finished their rounds all day except our PGAC boys. Even more impressive is not one of them finished in the NAGA points and I hear their bags and clothes are still not dry!
☆JARRYD SADLER, CONOR WINCHESTER, JOEL WELSFORD, SEB DRAGA, LUKE EVANS & TREV CLANCY ☆
MITO PEREIRA AWARD
Bestowed upon the player who falters when victory seems within reach. Named in honor of the Chilean rookie who famously squandered a chance to win the 2022 PGA Championship when he shit the bed on the 18th with a double bogey.
Much like last months Mito Pereira Award there wasnt a clear winner, we needed to get a little quirky with our selection. So once again we looked at who had the biggest advantage and didnt use it. With no Dunes members amongst our numbers the obvious biggest advantage too scoring was good weather and looking through this month's cellar dwellers most had brutal conditions!
But one man stood out and i'll let his own words sum up his 20 points........
"No Rain, No Wind, No excuses"
So the Mito Pereira Award for the biggest bed shitting of the month goes to:
☆Trav Quirk☆
Hope the new online coach helps mate!
Thats the Round 4 wrap up, see you at St Andrews Beach for Round 5!
