EVENT THREE WRAP UP
The third round of the PGAC 24/25 is now in the books. Despite much of the month being plagued by terrible weather and with more limited course availability than in previous months, we still saw excellent participation. A total of 44 players navigated the expansive fairways of Ranfurlie GC.
Out of the 44 participants, five competitors met or exceeded their handicap, marking a 500% increase compared to last month. Predictably, the more forgiving course at Ranfurlie resulted in improved scores, with an average Stableford score of 30.6, more than three points higher than at Cape Schanck. This month offered a more even blend of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
Monthly Winner:
STEPHEN OAKES (20) After also struggling last month, Oaksy tore Ranfurlie apart. Despite his modest handicap, he had no less than 11 good looks at birdie that day—truly a remarkable outing! Once his round was complete, he nervously watched as Pete narrowly missed his putt for the victory. Stephen's anxious wait continued throughout the month. On the final Friday of the competition, I witnessed him checking his MiScore every time I saw him at branch, as the final seven competitors completed their rounds. In the end, there was little to worry about as the brutal winds made for very tough scoring conditions, with several from that final group unfortunately appearing in the NAGA points! All in all, it was a great round three victory and score for Oaksy!
Monthly Runner Up:
PETE LINCOLN (20) after finishing dead last at Cape Schanck with a round so rough he was contacted repeatedly by AV Peer Support, it was fantastic to see Pete turn things around this month. He nearly achieved a fairy tale last-to-first place finish. Heading to the last tee, needing a bogey for 42 points and the ultimate redemption, Pete fell agonizingly short with a double bogey on the beast of a par-5 18th.
Top Performances:
Best Front 9:
PETE LINCOLN (20) with impressive 22 points. Astonishingly besting his entire Round Two 18 hole score before he reached the 7th Tee box!
Best Back 9:
RYAN LAVERY (14) clearly determined to turn things around following his Mito Periera Award winning efforts on his Back nine last month. A stellar 23 points even with his double bogey on the 18th resulted in a solid 3rd place finish for the month.
Best Gross Score:
REECE TWYFORD (8): Carded a solid 80 off the stick to complete a hattrick of best gross scores, super solid golf Reece!
This month's unfortunate NAGA points recipients were:
Round 3 NAGA Points:
• DYLAN HALL: 5 Points
• DANNY KNIGHT: 4 Points
• SEB DRAGA & JARRYD SADLER: 3 Points
• TOM BAILEY, BEN FERRARI-MELA, BRENTON MAY & JARRYD DIETZEL: 2 Points
• SEAN DWYER, MATT GOODINGS, SPYKE MILLICAN, CHRIS GRUNDY AND KANE GROSE: 1 Point each
Special mention to Dylan Hall, who had an uncharacteristic round, scoring the monthly low of 21 points. We can exclusively reveal that the night before, he broke one of his fingers playing basketball but decided to play through the pain without telling anyone.
MONTHLY AWARDS:
TINDER AWARD
The player/s with the most swipes on their scorecard.
☆DYLAN HALL☆ - 7 Swipes
GATTUSO AWARD
Awarded to the player with the greatest variance between their front and back nines. This accolade pays tribute to the passionate Italian football coach/player Gennaro Gattuso and his truly descriptive quote surrounding his teams performance. This 5 second YouTube video is a must see to truly understand the Gattuso Award:
https://youtu.be/QJHUbtR0yI8?si=LEK88SKComSvQQhl
With no outrageous differentials between peoples Back and Front Nines this month, we couldn't ignore the massive turn around in a certain players fortunes between Rounds 2 and 3. Truly no better representation of Gattuso Golf!!!!
☆PETE LINCOLN☆ - 28 Point Difference (13 Rnd 2 v 41 Rnd 3)
SANDMAN AWARD
Awarded to the player who saw more bunkers than fairways.
☆ BRETT HOGAN ☆ - Despite receiving clear instructions to avoid bunkers at all costs, Hogan visited no less than 20 of Ranfurlies (suboptimal) bunkers.
Quote from the man himself:
"Honestly they weren't too bad the boys just didn’t try enough out"
MITO PEREIRA AWARD
Bestowed upon the player who falters when victory seems within reach. Named in honor of the Chilean rookie who famously squandered a chance to win the 2022 PGA Championship when he shit the bed on the 18th with a double bogey.
Much like the Gattuso award this month, we had no clear or obvious winner of the Mito Pereira Award. Despite Petes flawless reenactment of Mito's 18th hole so many of us doubled the 18th, and considering Pete’s last round, he can hardly be accused of shitting the bed this month. Steve Ryan and Ryan Dale certainly could have scored better in their final four or five holes, but that still wasn't likely enough to chase down the leaders.
So, this month I had to take a different approach and in doing so I began by determining who came in with some kind of advantage. And there's nothing quite like home course advantage, which one amongst us had and surely hoped to use fully or at the very least put down a solid score they could count on come season's end. Unfortunately, that poor bugger instead proceeded to shoot a disastrous 23 points, their lowest score at the course in over 12 months!
So as much as I hate to kick a man whilst he’s down, this month our Mito Pereira Award for the biggest bed shitting of the month goes to none other than Ranfurlie member:
☆Jarryd Sadler☆
Hopefully, that brand new Titleist driver of yours can comfort you and bring you better luck next month.
Thats the Round 3 wrap up, see you at The Dunes for Round 4!
